A shield for hard-to-clean teeth
A sealant is a thin coating on the chewing surface of a back tooth. It helps keep food and germs out of deep grooves. Children and teens often benefit. Some adults may benefit too.
A simple visit
We check for decay, clean and dry the tooth, then apply the coating. A light may be used to set it. Sealing a healthy tooth usually does not need drilling.
Keep up daily care
Sealants can wear or chip, so we check them at later visits. Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth. A sealant protects part of a tooth; it does not make the whole tooth decay-proof.
Common questions
Can a sealant cover a cavity?
We first check the tooth. A cavity may need a filling instead.
Does insurance cover it?
Coverage and age limits vary. Ask us to check your plan before the visit.
