When a tooth needs a filling
Decay can make a hole in a tooth, called a cavity. It may hurt with cold drinks or sweets, or it may not hurt at all. An exam helps us find out how deep it goes.
What to expect
We numb the area if needed, remove the decay, and fill the space. We shape the filling and check how your teeth meet. A tooth-colored filling is made to blend with your tooth.
Care after a filling
Wait until numbness wears off before chewing. Some sensitivity may occur. Call if your bite feels high, pain gets worse, or a filling breaks. Brush and floss as usual unless we give you other steps.
Common questions
Could I need a crown instead?
If a large part of the tooth is weak or broken, a cap called a crown may protect it better. We will explain your choices.
What will it cost?
The size of the filling and your plan affect the cost. Ask for an estimate before care.
