Signs to look for
Healthy gums help hold your teeth in place. Gum disease can cause bleeding, swelling, bad breath, or loose teeth. It can also develop without pain. An exam helps us check the gums and bone around your teeth.
Cleaning below the gums
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning. We remove buildup from below the gums and smooth the roots. We may numb the area and split care across visits.
Keeping your gums healthy
Gums may feel sore and teeth may be sensitive after care. Follow your home care steps and keep follow-up visits. Deep cleaning helps control disease but does not replace daily brushing and cleaning between teeth.
Some cases need more care or a gum specialist. We will explain if that applies to you.
Common questions
Is this the same as a regular cleaning?
No. Deep cleaning treats buildup below the gums when signs of disease are present.
Will it cure gum disease for good?
Gum disease can return. Ongoing care helps keep it under control.
